George Soros's television program Democracy Now!, typically a bastion of anti-free market rhetoric, produced a terrifying must-watch episode this week regarding the trampling of individual rights. In the lead segment of the episode, William Binney, former technical director of the National Security Agency, makes the bold claim that his prior employer collects, stores, and data mines personally-identifiable electronic communications of American citizens using a system he helped create. As if the underemployed aren't suffering enough working low-level jobs for a fraction of their earning potential, they must now deal with threats to their menial employment caused by government interference in the private sector.U.S. employers, facing rising employee costs due to increasing government regulation and the probability that Obamacare will further increase costs, are rushing to automate everything they can, from checkout lines to resume screening to journalism. More and more retail establishments are employing self-checkouts despite their promotion of lost revenue due to theft, talent management software is increasingly replacing humans in human resources departments, and even some major media outlets are employing robots to write copy.
