Liberty Worth The Social Opportunity Costs

Liberty Worth The Social Opportunity CostAs the ECOMINOES brand grows, I find myself increasingly shut out of social opportunities. I'm perplexed by this, as I don't understand how one's personal politics--kept separate from interpersonal relationships--could make someone socially undesirable in the eyes of others. I ask myself: how could perpetuating the ideas of great men such as Thomas Jefferson--at the appropriate times--be considered a social liability? How is perpetuating the ideas of liberty in one's own time be something of which to be ashamed?

In these tumultuous times, perpetuating the ideas of liberty is honorable. Those who have accepted the responsibility of spreading the word must accept that being shunned socially is one of the costs we must bear. But liberty and the future of this country are well worth the price we pay.

    1. Unfortunately, turkeys rule the world. But the people who've shunned me for my political activism aren't turkeys. They're intimidated. It's ironic that someone as laid back as me has been called intimidating, but I've been told that more than once. I wish I weren't perceived that way, but I'm not going to stop doing what I do because of it.

  2. I understand what you're going through. Since I started blogging about conservative issues over at TheWriteAmerica.com I've taken a lot of heat from friends - who ironically enough don't have any trouble posting their own political views (mostly on Facebook). I've been Facebook-unfriended by people, and actually purged my own Facebook friends list to cut down on having to see liberal hate in my own timeline. While I'm more than pleased to engage in actual debate with people, the flat out blind hatred and vulgar comments became to wearing on my spirit.

Keep fighting the good fight, Seth. I just discovered your blog last week, and I for one am glad you have decided to take a stand and share your writings despite the social opportunity cost.

  3. Thanks, Jerry. On FB, I try to keep political posts relegated to the ECOMINOES page (not my personal page), but my reputation as a libertarian pundit is what is costing me socially. It sucks bad in terms of dating because my long period of unemployment/underemployment has already put me at a big disadvantage (http://www.ecominoes.com/2012/08/this-is-what-its-like-to-be-long-term.html) But this is more important than getting rejected for dates or losing casual acquaintances. This is important work I'm doing.
