My Take On Robert Wenzel's Controversial "Libertarian Bitch" Piece

My Take On Robert Wenzel's Controversial "Libertarian Bitch" Piece
Libertarian blogger Robert Wenzel wrote a controversial (and aptly titled) article earlier this week called How to Deal with Government: Become a Libertarian Bitch. In the post, Robert argued that libertarians shouldn't turn down government services based on their ideology, but they should utilize as many government services as possible to bleed the leviathan. Said the publisher of Economic Policy Journal:
The question...must become, how much interaction should a libertarian have with government. My answer to that is that a libertarian should be a "libertarian bitch" and take and take and take.
And his justification:
...to take government money so that it is not used in an aggressive manner, and so that it moves the government towards collapse and confusion is a noble cause.
I agree with Robert in that it's acceptable for a libertarian to utilize government services. First of all, a libertarian isn't an anarchist. Frédéric Bastiat himself stated that government is needed to protect "life, liberty, and property". And, because the government has a monopoly over many services, it's nearly impossible to not use them. For example, I've been taking a couple of prescription drugs for years. I think it's stupid that, after all of this time, the FDA requires me to first pay for an appointment with a licensed doctor to get new prescriptions and then pay a licensed pharmacist for the drugs, only to have a portion of the payment to the pharmacy directed back to the FDA. But I need my medications, and they can't be found on the black market. So, as a libertarian, am I supposed to risk my health?

But Robert's "bitch" proposal is counter-productive. Becoming a "bitch" is increasing the demand for government services. Even in the world of government, supply is adjusted to meet demand. If every libertarian became a "libertarian bitch" and sucked Uncle Sam dry, the government would simply grow to meet the increased demand. In fact, I can think of few instances where demand for government services hasn't been (over)supplied.

Maybe the day will come when the supply of government services becomes so large that the Government collapses on itself. But how big and oppressive would it have to become to reach that point?

  1. I feel that we are not that far off, Mr. Mason. Almost 16 trillion in the hole and more debt coming with the implementation of 'Obamacare' and the extension of the Bush tax cuts. It's hard not to see the implosion coming, but with most of the voting bloc being educated by the government, well, you get the rest.
