Drugs are illegal because bureaucrats and law enforcement types need jobs. The strange bedfellows of hysterical mothers and the pharm lobby pressed the gov to play nanny. And even though some drugs, in moderation, were found to be benign, and one, marijuana, found to be much less harmful than alcohol, the drugs remain illegal. Because the desk jockies in DC and meathead cops on the street couldn't make it in the private sector.
